Summer solstice was June 20th and now the days are fleeting –– well, not quite yet.

The good news is that it is officially summer and the weather is full-blown amazing. The bad news is that the days will be getting shorter and shorter as we head into fall.

Summer solstice is the longest day of the year (for anyone in the northern hemisphere) and in some places, the day lasted the full 24 hours. The summer solstice is great for more than just an increase of sleeping mask sales, it can also be great for your productivity.

The days may now be getting shorter, but you can still make the most of these reasonably long days. Since we are absolute health-nuts over here at HealthTap, we just want to make sure you are taking care of your body so that it can function at its highest capacity, no matter which hour of the day you are in.

Block the sun:

The sun will still be out in long durations in the coming days. While those durations will become increasingly less and less, it’s important to protect your skin before you head out.

Keep it simple by making sure you have these three things before you leave the house: sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen. Have fun with your accessories and make them fashionable if you want. As long as they effectively protect you from the sun’s harmful rays, anything goes.

Oh, but please apply the sunscreen before you head into the sun. That’s kind of the point.

Drink up:

We’ve said it before and we will say it again. Hydrate every single day, even if you aren’t thirsty. Sure, this means frequent bathroom breaks, but that means you’re doing it right!

Try to avoid beverages that dehydrate you and stick to pure water. Pair a tall glass of water with your meals instead of drinking a soda or sugary juice. Of course, you’re not restricted to just drinking a cold one at the dinner table, feel free to take a few bottles on the road! Not only will you be replenishing your body with the liquid it needs, but your skin will have a healthy glow as well.

Eat well:

Long days are perfect for a summer barbecue.

Get grilling with a few healthy recipes you’ve been meaning to try. The extra daylight means the party can go on and on. If you’re in need of some food inspo, you can always try one of the recipes we have already shared or give this one a go:

Grilled Watermelon
What you’ll need:

8 slices seedless watermelon, wedges
2 tablespoons olive oil
Sea salt
Fresh ground pepper

What you’ll do:

Cut the watermelon in half, place cut side down on the table, then cut into slices, about 1 1/2 inches thick. Cut each slice in half, creating two wedges.

Lightly sprinkle the wedges on both sides with the salt. Stand the wedges on their edges on a rack over a sink or pan and let them drain for half an hour.

Preheat the grill to high.

After the watermelon has drained, rinse each piece under cold running water. Place each piece between two folded paper towels and gently but firmly press to remove excess water.

Brush the watermelon lightly on both sides with the olive oil. Grill over high heat until grill marks have formed and the melon is slightly softened, about 5 minutes.

Remove from grill and sprinkle with sea salt and a little fresh ground pepper.
