About 9% of the population suffer from some type of depression, and it is the leading cause of disability for adults aged 15–44. While depression is extremely common, it is also very treatable.

While feeling sad is a very normal emotion, if you believe that your feelings sadness and dejection are consistently outweighing your feelings happiness, this may indicate that you should check if you are exhibiting any of the other signs of depression.

Here are some of the symptoms to watch for:

  1. Feelings of sadness, or feeling down most of the time
  2. Feelings of hopelessness
  3. Loss of interest in previously enjoyable activites
  4. An increase or decrease in appetite or weight
  5. A noticeable increase or decrease in sleeping
  6. Becoming easily agitated or lethargic
  7. Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  8. Difficulty concentrating
  9. Suicidal ideation (thinking about death and dying, suicidal thoughts and plans)
