Every weekend should be a three-day weekend. However, the reality is that three-day weekends are rare pockets of extended fun and relaxation. When you are fortunate enough to come across one of these gems, be ready with a game plan to make the most of every second. If you play your cards right, you should end the weekend feeling rested, rejuvenated, and just generally awesome.

Maximize your chances of feeling good by avoiding activities that bring you down (no thanks, hangovers) and choose to engage in activities that keep you feeling happy and healthy. To help you out, we have a few suggestions to help you jog your creativity or lace-up and jog around the block!

Get out

We aren’t referring to the hit movie.

Participating in outdoor activities is an easy way to stay fit and grab some sun. Breathe in the fresh air while going on a long hike or a casual neighborhood walk. If you want something a little more interactive, try looking for a few pick-up games to join. For those that are fortunate enough to live by the water, go for a swim or hangout and sunbathe.

Just be sure to hydrate and put on some sunscreen on your way out!

Stay in

Sleep debt is a real thing, and chances are you have a large stack of Z’s to payoff. There’s nothing wrong with kicking off your weekend by catching up on sleep and counting sheep. Try turning off you phone completely (gasp!) and let your body wake up when it’s ready.

If you really want to go all out on staying in, book a day at the spa. Treat yourself to a massage, or sauna session, and just soak in the silence. It’s a great way to unwind and de-stress after a long week (or couple of weeks.) You should leave your session feeling well-rested and energized.

Catch up

Long weekends do wonders for your social life. Even introverts need time to catch up with their friends and loved ones. Throw a dinner party or barbecue so you can see all the people you haven’t seen in ages. Share stories and laughs while making new memories.

If you want to go beyond food, try a game of flag football or put together a scavenger hunt. If you really want to catch up, get a squad together for a weekend getaway. Group activities are a great way to make sure you see everyone you want to see within a short timeframe. Of course, you’ll wish you could spend more time with them but alas, the weekend is fleeting. Make the most of the time you have!

Eat well

Finally! You have time to attempt those mouthwatering recipes you’ve seen on social media. Whether you plan to dine alone or join a potluck, there will be ample time for you to tap into your inner Masterchef.

Head to your local farmer’s market or grocery story for the freshest ingredients and try your hand at one of the numerous healthy recipes we’ve written about previously. If you want to challenge yourself with a cute and complex recipe from social media, go ahead! You’ll definitely impress or at least get an A for effort. Whatever you decide, there is no reason you should be eating fast food for the next three days.

Be informed

Knowledge is power.

The world is a big place and constantly evolving. Try tuning into a recent podcast or go old-school with a newspaper and read up on the latest world events. It’s always good to be aware of the world you are living in and it just so happens you’ll have a bit of time this weekend to be in-the-know.

If news is not your thing, you can always grab a book or play a few mind games to keep your brain sharp. That’s right, you should exercise your brain just like you workout other parts of your body. Using this weekend to gain more knowledge (of whichever subject you choose to explore) is always a great way to engage in self-improvement.

What are you waiting for? Don’t let this weekend slip away. Choose an activity and make the most of your three-day weekend!
