The clock strikes 2:30pm and you’re wishing you could go take a nap, but you still have a few hours of work left to power through. We know all too well that it can truly be a challenge to motivate ourselves to do work as we slug through the afternoon slump. Instead of reaching for a second (or third, or fourth) cup of coffee, which can dehydrate you and leave you feeling jittery, try these 8 ideas to boost your energy without another crash.

Sip a glass of iced green tea

If you really do need that caffeine, iced green tea is a perfect option for your afternoon because it also hydrates you. Dehydration can contribute to low energy, and the green tea will help refresh you while giving you a hydrating boost. Plus, you’ll keep your afternoon beverage sugar free, while also getting the added health benefit of green tea’s high concentration of antioxidants.

Munch on a small balanced snack

Munching on a balanced snack that will both level your blood sugar and keep you sustained can help you get a needed burst of energy during a crash. Try this recipe for energy balls: which combine healthy fats, whole grains, protein, and fiber to give you a perfect (and delicious) afternoon energy boost.

Take your meeting on a walk

You know that afternoon meeting you have scheduled? Take it outside. A walk will help get the blood flowing, and the fresh air will help energize you. Not only is this a healthier, more active way to get your work done, but getting out of the indoor office can be a needed way to take a break from staring at your computer all day.

Diffuse essential oils

Create a playlist of your favorite energy-boosting songs that you will get excited to listen each day while you work. Music has the ability to perk you up and make you feel more motivated, so when you’re hitting your slump, put in those headphones, get pumped up, and get to work.

Give yourself a neck massage

Staring at a computer screen all day can add tension to your neck and shoulders, can dry out your eyes, and can give you a headache. Take a quick break to walk around the office, and spend a few minutes massaging out the tension in your neck and shoulders. This will help increase blood flow to the area, and will help relieve any of the tightness that may be may be contributing to a tension headache.

Dark chocolate does contain a small amount of caffeine, but it also contains theobromine, which boosts energy as well. The low sugar content of dark chocolate won’t lead to a crash, but the decadent taste will leave you satisfied and perked up (plus you’ll get some antioxidants and healthy fats as well). Nibbling on a rich square of dark chocolate can also help boost your mood; as dark chocolate has been shown to boost levels of that feel-good neurotransmitter, serotonin, in the brain.

Do the work you are the most excited to accomplish

Start your day with the work that is hardest to complete, and save the tasks that you are the most excited to tackle for the afternoon. Switching gears to a project you are excited to tackle on can help to re-motivate you to power through the next few hours.
